For this project, students were asked to pick an individual who they find inspirational. The goal was for students to improve their shading skills and understanding of drawing three-dimensionally, and learn how to draw large-scale by using the grid method. Students set up their grids with a grid of 2×2 inch squares and used a 5×7 reference photo of their inspirational figure. This was a very successful project for my students to learn how to draw portraits, focus on scale and value and learn about such portrait artists as Chuck Close, Frida Kahlo, and Kehinde Wiley.
